BMW M3 – Engine Light

The owner of a BMW M3 booked a visit to our workshop to check on an engine light issue.

To understand why faults occur on a vehicle, our experienced mechanics use a scanner to check for any stored faults. This allows the mechanics to understand the issues with the vehicle and take proper course of actions. With this particular M3, 3 faults were identified: catalytic converter 1, catalytic converter 2 and left brake light. The inspection also suggested the exhaust be examined.

Our mechanic found that to clear and repair the catalytic converter faults, the oxygen sensor would need to be spaced further out from the exhaust and the ECU would require reprogramming.

At pickup, the proud owner of this BMW M3 was pleased with the result and happy to have the car back in top condition.

BMW M3 Service & Transmission Diagnosis

The owner of this BMW M3 booked in for the annual service as per BMW specifications and SMG transmission system diagnosis.

The service was carried out first according to the log book schedule and current km on the vehicle. This included replacing the engine oil along with various filters, spark plugs and other liquids and lubricants as needed.

As the service was carried out, the brake fluid was flushed from the car and replaced. Brake fluid is flushed and system is bled of air every 2 years to maintain consistent brake pedal feel as well as maintaining the car brake system servicing schedule.

A SMG diagnosis was run on the car. This means that a particular diagnosis is carried out to find problems with the cars transmission and clutch systems. The diagnosis was carried out accordingly with our technicians carrying out a clutch re-alignment procedure and bleeding the hydraulic oil system to rectify the client’s complaint.

After the vehicle service and transmission system repair was carried out, a test drive was completed to finalize the service.

BMW M3 SMG Diagnostics and Repair

This BMW M3 was towed into our workshop to look at an issue with the SMG. After it arrived though the vehicle would not start so we had to look at this as well. The issue with the SMG was described to us by the customer which only seemed to happen after running the vehicle for 45 minutes in traffic. After the period of time elapsed the SMG light would come on then it would start dropping into neutral for 5 to 10 seconds then reengage gears but no issues while on a highway. If the vehicle was left to cool the SMG light would go out and the shifts would be normal.

A new SMG pump and actuator was then ordered and installed which included SMG oil. We then wheel aligned the vehicle and noted that the rear brakes would needed to be changed soon, the tail shaft coupler was cracked, the rear diff side seals were leaking and the rocker cover gasket was leaking too.

BMW M3 Broken Belt, Unknown Noise and Warm Air Con

One of our customers recently had their VW Golf R in our workshop for a turbo system upgrade, DSG upgrade and a Supersprint performance exhaust system installed. Soon after that was done he brought in his BMW M3 which had a broken belt, strange noise and problem with the air con.

The vehicle was towed to us to check the issues and damage which may have occurred when the belt snapped. Looking at the vehicle the main engine belt was shredded and the coolant pipe from the top of the radiator hose to the expansion tank was split and leaking coolant. We then removed the fan shroud to look at the pulleys which were still ok unlike the air conditioning belt which was cracked. The two belts and coolant hose were then replaced as required and the cooling system filled and bled.

A test drive and inspection on the hoist showed us that the rear right sway bar link was loose. We retensioned the bar and adjusted the hand brake at the rear wheels as required.

The air conditioning system was blowing warm air which could have just been a regassing issue, though we would need to look into it to confirm. We recovered less gas than what was required in the system so we recharged it up though warm air still came out of the centre vents. The wiring to the evaporator sensor was all ok though we found the heater tap was stuck open. Once we gained access to the tap we noticed one wire was coming out of the plug which caused this problem. The wiring harness was repaired and all the parts were refitted before a final test drive was done.

BMW M3 Battery and Repairs

One of our customers brought in their BMW M3 which needed to fix a few issues.

Three of the wheels needed to be repaired as they had gutter rush on them. While this was being done we replaced the battery to rectify the oil level being low and the service light always being on. The oil was drained and measured which showed the level was ok but testing found low voltage errors in the system. A load test was done on the battery which failed and therefore meant a new battery was required.

With an engine light that was on, we scanned the vehicle and found O2 sensor faults stored. This was due to the exhaust which had been modified and exposed the O2 sensors.

The glovebox lock intermittantly did not open but this would require further diagnosis to rectify this issue.
