Mini Cooper S Coolant Leak and CV Boot Replacement

A Mini Cooper S was brought into our workshop to get some work done including a service, replacing brakes, looking into a coolant leak and replacing the CV boot.

Mini-Cooper-Wheels-Engine-RamSpeed-1When we checked over the vehicle we pressure tested the cooling system and found the coolant leak was coming from the thermostat housing and waterpump. Both these items were replaced in order to rectify the leaks including some system hoses. The cooling system was then bled and filled as required. Once all the parts were refitted the engine was degreased and the vehicle road tested.

Mini-Cooper-Wheels-Bumper-RamSpeed-1We then removed the drivers side front drive shaft to carry out the CV boot replacement but upon attempting to remove the shaft we found the CV shaft seized into the hub and was unable to be removed. Our next option was to remove the complete hub assembly and try to press out the shaft but this still did not work.

Mini-Cooper-Engine-RamSpeed-2The front right drive shaft and complete hub assemply had to be replaced as a result. We then inspected the boot on the passenger front which was ok. The hub nut was removed and we found the thread and associated area was covered in corrosion, no other parts were attempted to be removed as the boot was ok.

A major service was done while the vehicle was on the hoist and involved replacing the oil, air and pollution filters. This was done according to the log book schedule and the current km on the vehicle. Other repairs done while the vehicle was in the shop included replacing the rocker cover and sump gaskets to fix some oil leaks, the drive belt tensioner and pulleys were replaced and the rear brake pads.

Mini Cooper Transmission Service and Diagnostics

A Mini Cooper came into our workshop that had a few diagnosed issues to look into and confirm. We also did a transmission service on the vehicle while it was here.

When the vehicle came in, we were advised that the radiator support panel and the lower front bumper trim needed replacing. The top engine mounts including the stabilizer mount needed replacing too. According to the customer the radiator was leaking on the O/S tank and issues with the high pressure power steering hose.

Mini-Cooper-Wheels-Bumper-RamSpeed-2The transmission service was completed and we noticed that there was a thump before and after the service was completed. This occurred less after the service when it warms up, but the issue is likely mechanical and further diagnostics would be required. The most likely issue is that the transmission would require an overhaul and we found metal shavings on a magnet.

We noted after looking into the vehicle that the transmission was harsh going into drive gear. The wheel bearings in fron of the drive shafts was noisy and the window regulator was also noisy and clunks on application.

Mini-Cooper-Wheels-Brakes-RamSpeed-1The radiator was leaking which needs to be replaced, the airbag light was on for the left and right hand sides, top engine mounts are needed, the front left jacking point was missing, power steering hoses from the reservoir were leaking, the rocker cover gasket was leaking, the radiator support was broken off and the front bar lower plastic trim was missing. After looking over the Mini, we advised the customer that is should not be driven before some of the issues were rectified.

Mini Cooper S Coolant Leak Diagnostics

Below is a Mini Cooper S that was in our workshop to look into a coolant leak which was occurring on the vehicle.

We first pressure tested to find the coolant leaks which was confirmed to be coming from above the transmission. When we inspected the leak closely we verified that the thermostat and housing were leaking.

After we replaced the housing the cooling system was bled and refilled as required. The operation of the heating system was then tested and we carried out BMW/Mini test schedules on the IHKA electronics which was all ok. We verified that the heating system was working and hot after replacement of the thermostat and the system was bled correctly with no air bubbles.

Mini-Cooper-S-Exhaust-Wheels-Boot-RamSpeed-1 Mini-Cooper-S-Engine-RamSpeed-2When the mechanics were on a test drive the engine light came on once. The DME was scanned in our workshop which showed a fault for the high pressure pump. We were able to clear the fault though we noted the symptons were the vehicle was running rough at idle.

Mini Cooper S Clutch and Leaks

Below you can see images of a Mini Cooper S that we worked on late last week for some oil leaks and a clutch.

The customer had supplied a single mass clutch kit which we fitted to the Mini as required. The transmission oil was topped up once this was completed.

Next we looked into an oil leak which was coming from the engine. The rocker cover gasket, sump gasket and oil filter housing gasket was replaced. Also replaced was the engine auxiliary belt and coolant hose due to impact damage from the engine cooling fan. The radiator was replaced to rectify a coolant leak and the system bled.

Mini Cooper S Wrong Oil Repair

There was a Mini Cooper S in our workshop last week to repair as the incorrect oil was used. We carried out an oil and oil filter change as required for this job. A slight oil leak from the rocker cover was noticed and the customer advised.
